Why Pursue Bachelor of Arts in
Environmental Studies?
There are five compelling reasons to pursue your undergraduate degree
in Environmental Studies at USIU in San Diego.
- Environmental problems threaten all of us, and solving these
problems will require an enormous effort. Current expenditures for
environmental protection are more than 186 billion dollars a year in
the U.S. alone.
- These problems are international, and USIU offers a unique
international and multicultural experience with the highest percent of
international students at a national university in the U.S. and
students from more than 70 countries. Multicultural issues are a theme
throughout the University - but are especially important in solving
environmental problems.
- Our program emphasizes the methods and skills needed to sustainably
manage and restore the environment. This is a story of hope and
regeneration - not despair.
- Our program includes problem-based, "hands-on" learning,
which enables students to relate classroom material to environmental
practice and prepares them for career
opportunities. Small class size and contact with professors rather
than teaching assistants makes classes more enjoyable and more
effective.
- And finally, while most programs talk about environmental problems,
we work on solutions. We develop students ability to analyze
environmental problems and work with people toward solutions.
Moreover, minors and/or courses in Business
Administration,
International Business, Hotel and Restaurant
Management, Tourism
Management, and International Relations combine well with the
Environmental Studies degree.
About
San Diego
San Diego is an exceptionally good place to study environmental issues.
Within two hours you can travel from the beautiful beaches of
San Diego, including La Jolla
(SealCam),
(diving, surfing, kayaking, wind-surfing, hang-gliding, swimming), to the
mountains (backpacking, hiking, mountain biking, hang-gliding), and down
to the incredible Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (hiking, backpacking,
4wd, mountain bikes). A half hour to the south is Mexico and the complex
challenge of managing development and environmental quality in a fast
growing megacity. South of Tijuana and Tecate is the incredibly beautiful
Baja Peninsula and the Sea of Cortes (sea kayaking, fishing, diving,
exploring, mountain biking). The good weather, only ten inches of rain a
year, has made San Diego a Mecca for triathletes and competition athletes
of all kinds. San Diego also has a velodrome with an extensive racing
schedule and active bicycle road racing and touring groups. |
