Bainbridge's Rules of Thumb for Sustainability

By David A. Bainbridge
Associate Professor
United States International College of Business
Alliant International University

Energy

With current understanding and best practices we can:

  •   Improve health and productivity and

  •   Reduce building energy use 30-50% at no additional cost

With best practices and leading edge technology we can:

  •   Improve health and productivity and

  •   Reduce building energy use 80% at 10-20% additional cost

This would dramatically reduce
building lifecycle cost

Water

With current understanding and best practices we can often:

  •   Reduce water use 50% at no additional cost

  •   Reduce water use 80-90% at 10-30% addition cost

With current understanding and best practices we can reduce:

  •   Stormwater 30-50% at no additional cost

  •   Stormwater 90+% at 10% addition cost

If we paid true cost, we could reduce resource use
per person 50% within 10 years.
